When should I choose Classic doors?

When we are involved in following a renovation, whether it is of an apartment, a villa, a store or a hotel, we are called upon to make numerous choices.

Often, by virtue of the conventional imprint infused into the design, it comes naturally to lean toward the choice of classical doors. Sometimes, however, the result proves unsatisfactory; at other times, however, incredibly elegant. How is this possible?

Are there right or wrong reasons why the same type of product may be taken or not taken into consideration? When should I choose Classic doors?

Neo-Classicism

Throughout history it is not uncommon to see a return to the past to revive architecture deemed too “modern”, in a negative sense.  And the classic style is the timeless reference whenever taste and elegance are to be brought back to the forefront.

One example above all is Neoclassicism, a movement that arose in the second half of the 18th century out of a rejection of the excesses of the Baroque, which were too complex and articulate compared to the cleaner, simpler and more rational forms of the Greek and Roman eras.

But there is no need to go too far: it is from an idea of a former U.S. president, for example, to propose a bill to impose a classical style for U.S. representative architecture, against the risk of having designs that follow brutalism and deconstructivism, so much in vogue in recent years.

Despite the great contribution of the avant-garde and modernisms aimed at looking to the future and achieving something never seen before, the classical style never wanes and is considered timeless, synonymous with elegance, good taste and refinement.

Watchword: consistency

The problem would not arise if we did not confuse the consistency of the classical style – in its interpretation, in the inspiration aimed at new achievements, etc. – with the sterile copying of forms stolen and tacked on in contexts they have nothing to do with.
Well, copy and paste does not work, and it has never worked over the centuries either.

This concept underlies our answer: when should we choose classic-style doors? When the project to be carried out is consistent with the chosen style.

We are surrounded by houses or hotels that seem from another time. Referring back to earlier times is a choice about which a large chapter of discussion could be opened, but there is no doubt that some achievements are indeed very elegant and refined precisely because of the use of the classical style.

And the best results are found where the classical style is interpreted and aimed at creating fresh, contemporary spaces: in essence, when the result is not anachronistic.

A timeless
style

It is easier to find this consistency in hotel or villa environments than in private apartment settings, where attention to detail in design is often taken to the highest level.
We all have the hotels in the historic centers of large cities that recall bygone times in our eyes, benefiting all the tourists who choose these cities as destinations for their travels.

Sometimes rooms are overloaded, as if recalling the classical style would lead to the need to fill any available corner with columns, moldings, sculptures or paintings. At other times, the designer’s touch is much more refined and the classical style interpreted, presented in such a way as to welcome the guest on a timeless journey, immersing him or her in the real feel of the place but without abandoning contact with the contemporary world in which he or she lives.

And this is the case of many hotels found in cities such as Rome, Florence, Venice or Capri: examples of refined interpretation of the classic style, adapted to individual locations thanks to a renewed revival of the original spirit.

In these contexts, would it make sense to go for beautiful minimalist or designer doors?
They could be the best doors in the world but, in most cases, they would remain cold and antiseptic compared to an environment that, instead, would be perceived as higher class.

It takes something with significantly more decorative weight.

Doors and windows:
attention to detail

This applies to both interior doors and windows and patio doors, for which the most sought-after collections are the benchmark. And it is really the case to say that detail makes all the difference.

Among the elements to be evaluated, consistent with the interior design or style of the building, we can consider ashlars or mirrors, which characterize the sashes. Cornices can embellish the compartment and beautify the frames, up to and including the use of capitals and friezes (even with gilded parts), if the consistency of style requires it.

A style that can also be echoed in the shapes, be they arched or even shaped when there is, for example, a need to follow the window designs of historic buildings.

Pay attention to the choice of colors, to be made in line with the color constraints that, often, burden historic buildings and villas, or with the shades selected in the development of the interior design.

All this, without departing from the necessary requirements for both interior doors, such as soundproofing, and for windows, which must meet comfort and energy-saving requirements, as well as aesthetic ones.

The heart of Italian style is recognized in the classical forms, with all the appropriate examples (Tuscan style, Venetian style, etc.), envied and recalled in all parts of the world. But only by going into the original rules and interpreting them to the fullest will it be possible to keep their sophistication alive and recreate a dreamlike atmosphere. And in this context, a classical door will be a welcome obligatory choice, completing a work of art.

This is the key to understanding when choosing a classical door. And knowing how to use style intelligently means succeeding in the multifaceted goal of taking up a timeless tradition without necessarily having to anachronistically copy the design of the past, while at the same time avoiding any compromises in terms of comfort and functionality.
